District 24 funds cooking program for adults with developmental disabilities

Jun 23, 2022

The Eppleworth Adult Centre in Scarborough is setting the table for self-reliance – with an assist from District 24 Scarborough and East York in 2019. District 24 has provided a $4,000 grant to assist with a cooking program for people with developmental disabilities.

Eppleworth’s programming runs from literacy to physical fitness. In the cooking program, participants plan menus, budget, shop for the food, prepare it and share meals. In the summer, they harvest fresh vegetables from a local garden plot. The cooking also connects to a world exploration program, where participants do a monthly themed meal from a country they’re studying.

“By supporting the cooking program, we’re invested in strengthening the life skills of the adults who rely on Eppleworth,” says Paula Chambers, president, District 24 Scarborough and East York.

Eppleworth will use the District 24 funds to buy weekly groceries, customized aprons and chefs hats, and kitchen equipment. RTOERO members will also serve Eppleworth as volunteers.
